Jessore
is a city of about a quarter million people, located along the Bhairab
River in the Khulna division of Southwest Bangladesh. The city
evolved as a trade and agricultural center thanks to its location along
the route between Calcutta and Dhaka. Jessore has a rich
history. The city played a central role in the Indigo revolts
against the British in the latter half of the 19th century, and the
city was also contested during the Liberation war with Pakistan in
1971. Jessore is known as a cultural center. Mr. S.A.
Sultan, a renowned artist hailed from Jessore, as did Michael
Modhushudon Dutta, writer of the Meghnadbodh Kavya.
