Next to Dhaka, Chittagong is Bangladesh's largest city with a
population of around three and a half million. Chittagong
is Bangladesh's main port city and the commercial capital of
Bangladesh. The city is located on the banks of the Karnaphuli
River. Unlike most of Bangladesh which is flat, parts of
Chittagong are hilly. Chittagongians speaks a dialect of Bangla
that can be difficult for people from other parts to penetrate.
The area is culturally diverse; most of the population descended from
Arab, Afghan and Mughal invaders, and much later the Portuguese.
There is also a contribution from neighboring Myanmar and indigenous
people who live in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
