This lesson looks at culture through the lens of clothing. How does
what we wear send messages to our fellow countrymen? The world? What
stereotypes do we make about different styles of clothing? Students
examine the stereotypes they hold in their own culture through
documenting different styles of clothing. Through the forum students
discuss what clothing says about a culture by looking at their own
photos and text, as well as those sent by their partners. |

This year, the Muslim Holy Month of Ramadan fell in October. Ramadan is
a big part of Muslim culture, and schools in several countries
participating in the Global Connections and Exchange Program decided to
put their heads together and make presentations about Ramadan, looking
at its historic significance and the way that traditions vary between
regions. Students in Tajikistan, Palestine, Afghanistan and Bangladesh
hope that they can convey the meaning and cultural significance of the
Holy Month to partner schools in other countries that may not be as

Everybody has to eat right? So at least we have that it
common. Every culture has its own tastes, though. Food
preparation and eating habits are steep in tradition. Students
from the US, Tajikistan, Jordan and Afghanistan will share their
insights related to food in their own culture. At the end of the
project, they will prepare a menu or advertisement from a pretend
restaurant from the partner culture. Afterwards, their partners
can tell them if they got it right or not. |
