Students at the Badshah Foysal Islamic Institute in Jessore had an
interesting idea for Global Youth Service Day -- an art exchange
centered on the topic of environmentalism. Rather than
exchange paintings, however, the students exchanged skills.
Students from the Jessore Fine Arts Institute were invited to the
Badshah Foysal Internet Learning Center, where student volunteers
demonstrated drawing and painting software. In turn, the Fine
Arts students demonstrated more traditional drawing and painting
skills. Together, students from the two schools worked to create
environmentally friendly digital drawings. |

Students at the Safi Uddin Sarker Academy and College organized an oral
polio vaccination program for community children at their school in
Tongi as part of their Global Youth Service Day celebration.
Student volunteers, working with medical supervision, administered the
vaccine to younger children and updated their record of
vaccination. Polio cases worldwide have declined markedly in the
last three decades thanks to vaccination programs like this one.
However, there were reports of wild-type polio in Bangladesh within the
last year, causing international health organizations to step up
efforts here.

The students
of Kala Kakali High School, Chittagong, and the Safi Uddin Sarker
Academy and College in Tongi implemented the World
Map Project. In this project, student volunteers draw a huge world map
on the classroom wall
and paint each country with different colors. When the map is
dry, they then paint in the country names in Bangla and English.
The map remains after GYSD as a permanent reference tool for the school
and serves to remind everyone that we're all on the same
planet. |
