US LINC Student Biographies PDF Print E-mail
Talented highschool students from the LA area participated in a three-week exchange program to Bangladesh. Each of them is interested in community service and has displayed some skill as a youth leader -- check out their biographies:
Jammie: Jammie is in the eleventh grade and attends Belmont High School. Jammie is very involved in her school and is Student Body C-Track Vice President, and a member of her School Site Council. Jammie volunteers at the Boys and Girls club and enjoys singing at her church. She also loves reading and playing with her one-year old cousin. When not in school, she works at Washington Mutual, a well known bank in California . Jammie has joined this program to educate herself about other cultures around the world.


John: John currently lives with his mother in Newport Beach where he attends Newport Harbor High School . He has been very involved with many different sports, but now focuses on tennis where he is a member of the Varsity team and plays in junior tournaments on weekends. He recently became involved with Wushu, Chinese martial arts. In addition to concentrating on his studies in the DaVinci Math and Science Academy at Harbor, he is involved with the Big Brother Program and raising money for Hurricane Katrina victims through E-Bay. His hobbies include surfing, (both the waves and the internet), film, snowboarding, chatting on-line with his friends on MySpace, and traveling. He plans to attend college either on the East Coast or in Southern California but he hasn’t decided if he’ll major in nursing or business.


Bryant: Bryant is an understanding, open-minded, and well rounded person. He tries his best to perform at his peek with any obstacle. He believes that helping is not to make things happen, but to commit and listen. Bryan t loves to play football, basketball and chess. He also enjoys writing poetry and taking photographs. He is active in his community through the program Med-Cor, and Teen Court and recently participated in the L.A. AIDS Walk. While attending at an inner-city school, Manual Arts High School, he had performed greatly and gained the respect of the many teachers, and the student body.


Jessica: Jessica is 16 years old and is a junior at Orange High School. She is very studious and enjoys school. Jessica aspires to attend New York University and go into medicine. In her spare time she enjoys reading and listening to music. She listens to a variety of music and enjoys reading Dan Brown and Amy Tan books. Jessica also spends time with her friends. She and her friends they enjoy going to the Orange Circle and swimming together. She also enjoys doing karaoke. Her hobbies involve volunteering and writing. Jessica is involved in a variety of clubs at school, including Key Club, CPC, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Academic Decathlon, and Junior Statesman of America. She is also an officer of FBLA and President of the Book Club. Jessica enjoys learning about different cultures and taught herself Portuguese and hopes to learn German and Italian. She also hopes to become involved with other volunteer organizations such as the Make a Wish Foundation. Jessica is very dedicated and ambitious and likes keeping herself busy.

Ivan: Ivan is an intelligent young man. He is 15 years old and goes to school at Camino Nuevo High Tech High. Ivan lives with his family, his mother, father, and two siblings. In his spare time, Ivan likes to exercise and learn new things and get ideas on how he can help his community. Ivan is very passionate and believes that his goal in this world is to serve others in need. He has very good relations with his family and friends. Ivan also wants to be something great in life; he would like to gain enough power and respect so that he can change many things around him for the good of the human race. He believes that everyone is different in their own way and that everyone should be respected. Ivan wants to be a great leader in life and to help as many people as possible.


Angela: Angela is 16 years old and attends David Starr Jordan High School in Los Angeles. She plans to attend a small liberal arts college. Angela enjoys writing, poetry, dancing, and choreographs in her free time. She loves to debate and is very argumentative. She also likes to listen to classical music and meditate when she can get a moment to herself. Her goal in life is to be the best that she can be and to be as motivated and dedicated as possible. Her favorite quote is “He who is good at making excuses, is seldom good at anything else.”- Benjamin Franklin. She hopes one day to be a writer and start her own publishing company. She believes in dreaming big!


Ryan: Today Ryan is a part of Relief International because he wants to find out more about the outside world and more about who he is as a person. As a child, he spent his days in Nigeria with his family doing missionary work and aiding the local village people. At age five, after having spent his entire life in Nigeria , Ryan left Nigeria with his family. The whole family, his parents, twin sister, and two brothers moved to Southern California. Ryan is currently 17 years old and attends Monrovia High School. His involvement in his church, Boys’ State and school clubs sparked his interest in aiding the people around him and caused him to seek better ways of helping others. He is ecstatic about his opportunity with Relief International and hopes it will help him determine where to take his life next as he enters college.


Gloria: Gloria was born in Guatemala, Central America, and immigrated to the US when she was four years old. She has learned the English language quite well despite the fact that she speaks Spanish at home, thus making her a great translator. She is currently a senior attending Phineas Banning High School in the City of Wilmington. Gloria enjoys watching the Discovery Channel, History Channel, and Animal Planet. She also enjoys talking to friends who are scattered throughout the US via internet. Her favorite pastime is watching Naruto with English subtitles and reading the Naruto manga in English. Gloria volunteers as a adult health day care facility and enjoys becoming more informed about the military since she is planning on joining the Armed Forces in the future. Her long term dream is to become a registered nurse.
