For Global Youth Service Day, the students of Mr. Mohammad Abu Bakar's
class at the Khawja Ajmeri High School held a youth drug awareness
meeting with their peers. They led a discussion on the subject of drug
addiction. They talked about the social conditions that lead youth to
become addicted to drugs, and talked about how friends can recognize
when someone needs help with a drug habit. They also discussed how to
avoid drugs and prevent addiction.
Student leaders for the discussion included Md. Saiful Islam, Md.
Nafis, Mitu Kumar, Sagar, Sanny, Rashal, Nasir, Safayet, Ariful, Md.
Masbha, Mohibul, Farhad and Morshed.
Other students at the school conducted a safety workshop for the
community, reviewing common causes of accidents and what can be done to
prevent them. In particular, they concentrated on pedestrian and
automobile safety, as the leading cause of avoidable death for young
people in Bangladesh is related to traffic.
Student leaders for this presented were Tahamina Aktar Siddiquee,
Shakila Haque, Jesmin Aktar, Raihana Aktar, Nigar Sultana, Kamrul
Hasan, Junaid Rafi, Muhammad Shahedur Rahman, Fahim Masud Choudhury,
Mohammad Saiduzzaman
A third group examined the issue of unplanned urbanization, and its
impact on people in the Chittagong area. They talked about better
ways of planning cities and sharing resources, and presented
suggestions to lessen urban migration and crowding.
The student leaders for this presentation were Jubayed Ahmed Shovo,
Anik Kumar Das, Jitu Roy, Munna Borua, Nafis Istiaq, Sharmin Jahan,
Shaila Tamanna, Maria Jahan, Tanzila Tazin, and Shammy Sharmin.
Students brainstormed these topics of social concern, researched them
with the assistance of teachers and community members from around the
school, and prepared their presentations using facilities within the
school's internet learning center.
