The Green Hills of Earth PDF Print E-mail
On Earth Day, April 22, students at the Panthantuli Khan Shaheb City Corporation Girls High School in Chittagong conducted a tree planting ceremony followed by a public meeting about the issue of deforestation.

Here's what the students had to say:

Adopting a policy to make up for the lack of trees is called Reforestation.  Trees help us in many ways: they give us oxygen, food and shelter.  They make the land fertile and save the land from erosion.  Many herbal medicines are prepared from the leaves, roots and bark of trees.  Trees are also things of beauty.

They are essential to human life, but our environment is becoming more polluted every day.  The trees are essential to prevent air pollution.  They help cause rainfall and maintain the ecological balance.  That is why the poet says "give back the forest and take your town".  In our country, there should be at least 25% forest, but it is a matter of regret that we have only 17% of our total land area as forest.  So we cannot ignore the need to plant more trees.

Once upon a time, Bangladesh was created as a bottle-green coloured country, but now it does not have enough forests.  It is painful that the number of trees are decreasing day by day rather than increasing for the following reasons.

  • Increasing population requires more dwelling houses, so people cut down trees to make houses.
  • To burn brick in brick fields requires a huge number of trees each day
  • Some trees are cut down to make furniture

Some people inconsiderately cut down trees everywhere.  They do not think of the benefit to others and to the entire country.  They do not think that cutting down trees can destroy the environmental system.  For this, Bangladesh is going to be a graveyard of trees.  It is a great threat to the environment, because if it continues, our country will become a desert.

What we have done to make a solution:

  • We have tried to bring awareness to the population about tree plantation.
  • We have discussed the situation with different non-government organizations, encouraging them to come forward to help the people to this purpose.
  • We have inspired others to plant treees.
  • We have announce what we have done for tree plantation by printing posters
  • We have planted trees throughout the area, to help replace some of the forest
