GCE Schools celebrate World Press Freedom Day 2007 |

Journalism Club at two GCE schools in Bangladesh observed World Press Freedom Day 2007 on 3 May as elsewhere in the world with the theme: Press Freedom, Safety of Journalists and Impunity. The Journalism Club members at the Badsha Faisal Islamic Institute in Jessore invited journalists from print and electronic media to attend the celebration which included discussion about various aspects of journalism and safety and security issues of journalists in Bangladesh. The participants said that journalists in any society play important role in upholding democratic values and hold public and private sector accountable. They also voiced their concerns about the increased violence against journalists in Bangladesh. Several journalists from local news papers such as, The Daily Lok Shamaj , Daily Grammer Kagoj and Daily Spondon attended the event.

Chowara Girls High School in Comilla organized a workshop and discussion group at the ILC to celebrate the Press Freedom Day. Local representatives of national electronic and print media worked as resource person for the workshop while RI staffs moderated a discussion group on safety and security issues of journalists particularly in Bangladesh. The students learned some basic principles of journalism and why it is important for a journalist to maintain high ethical standard when reporting for media. Journalists from CSB TV Channel, ATN TV, NTV, Boishakhi TV, BD News, the Daily Moinamoti, Daily Rupsi Bangla and Daily Meghoti attended the workshop and discussion group.
