Dhaka

Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh, a city which has grown immensely in the 20th century from tens of thousands of inhabitants to the presently estimated 12 million.

Tongi
Tongi is located immediately North of Dhaka, but is within the Gazipur District. Many of the people who live in Tongi commute to Dhaka each day, mainly by bus. Many people are also employed at factories in EPZs, Export Processing Zones. EPZs are areas given special tax and tariff exemptions by the government in order to stimulate industry.

Gazipur

Gazipur is located about 30 kilometers North of downtown Dhaka and may be considered a suburb of the capital. Like Dhaka, Gazipur is both a city and a district. A National Forest lies just North of Gazipur. Gazipur is served by a large railway station as well.

During Bangladesh's Liberation War in which Bangladesh separated from Pakistan, the first armed resistance against Pakistan occupation forces began in Gazipur.

Gazipur is home to a number of academic institutions including the Islamic Institute of Technology, Bangladesh National University and the Madrassa Teacher Training Institute. In addition, there are many primary and secondary schools in Gazipur, and many have been involved in Global Connections and Exchange Program projects.
