Jessore is a city of about a quarter million people, located along the Bhairab River in the Khulna division of Southwest Bangladesh.  The city evolved as a trade and agricultural center thanks to its location along the route between Calcutta and Dhaka.  Jessore has a rich history.  The city played a central role in the Indigo revolts against the British in the latter half of the 19th century, and the city was also contested during the Liberation war with Pakistan in 1971.  Jessore is known as a cultural center.  Mr. S.A. Sultan, a renowned artist hailed from Jessore, as did Michael Modhushudon Dutta, writer of the Meghnadbodh Kavya.
